Alcohol Use in Care Homes for Older People in Wales
If you work or live in a care home or are involved in care home leadership, then your insights are exactly what we’re looking for. Your expertise will directly inform research that could impact the lives of thousands of older people in Welsh care homes.
Alcohol Change UK has commissioned Age Cymru and Practice Solutions to research how alcohol is used, managed and perceived in care homes for older people across Wales.
With Wales having one of the UK’s oldest populations, and growing concerns about alcohol-related harm in later life, the study aims to explore the range of current practices, attitudes, and underlying rationales in residential care settings. The key objectives include:
- Mapping current alcohol-related policies and practices in care homes.
- Identifying challenges and good practices in balancing resident autonomy, safety, and well-being.
- Exploring how values around dignity, health, and risk are negotiated in everyday care.
We hope that the findings will inform the development of guidance, training, and policies to improve the quality of life for people living in care homes.
