Celebrating 25 years supporting improvement in social care, health and public services

Back

We are proud to have supported ADSS Cymru in delivering the Unpaid Carers Project, helping to strengthen how unpaid carers’ needs are understood and assessed across Wales.

This national project explored current practice in unpaid carers’ needs assessments, identifying both strengths and opportunities to improve consistency, practitioner confidence, and outcomes for carers.

From insight to innovation

A key focus of our support was ensuring the work didn’t stop at insight but translated into practical, usable tools for frontline teams.

Alongside the report, the project has produced a suite of innovative, practice-led resources, including:

  • Short, accessible, bilingual training videos to build practitioner confidence
  • A step-by-step flowchart to guide day-to-day decision-making

These resources are designed to move beyond traditional guidance—embedding learning directly into practice and making it easier for teams to apply policy in real-world settings.

Enabling better outcomes for carers

Unpaid carers play a vital role in sustaining health and social care systems, yet many remain unidentified or unsupported. This project responds to that challenge by:

  • Strengthening early identification and assessment approaches
  • Supporting more confident, consistent practice across Wales
  • Helping services better recognise and respond to the diverse needs of carers

By combining evidence, co-production and practical tools at a national scale, this work represents a step forward in bridging the gap between policy and practice.

Our role

Practice Solutions worked alongside ADSS Cymru to design and deliver the key elements of the project, support the development of engaging, accessible resource, and help translate findings into practical solutions for local authorities and practitioners

This reflects our ongoing commitment to supporting partners to develop innovative, user-centred approaches that improve outcomes across social care.
